What is a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

Gum disease affects nearly half of all adults over the age of 30. As the disease progresses, small pockets form around your teeth, allowing plaque, bacteria and debris to gather in this area and further infect the gums. Over time, gum disease can lead to tooth and bone loss. A scaling and root planing is performed to help clean these small pockets and allow the gums to heal more closely to the teeth.

Who’s a good candidate for a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

While there are other periodontal treatments available for gum disease, this particular procedure has been used for decades to help reverse the damage caused by the disease. It’s crucial that you have the procedure done as soon as you learn you have gum disease.

What happens during a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?

Dr. Barsa and Dr. Delafuente will first administer a local anesthetic to numb one side of your mouth. Next, we’ll begin by scaling your teeth and removing plaque and tartar. We then work below the gum line to clean out the pockets that have begun to form. Next, we will smooth the roots of the teeth so that the gums can heal more closely to them and close the size of those pockets. You will then be scheduled to come in for the other side of your mouth to be treated in the same way.
